New TMDL Regulations and Storm Water Management Solutions

As the chief editor and blogger for Interstate Products (IPI), I was reviewing a recent article by one of our leading manufacturing partners, UltraTech, on storm water catch basins and new TMDL regulations put in place in Maryland and the District of Columbia and I decided to take a deeper dive into this area on behalf of our readers.  IPI offers a broad range of storm water management products that help prevent trash, oil and sediment, three of the largest contributors to contamination, from entering the nation’s waterways.  A result of runoff from storm water, much of which drains into gutter catch basins, our extensive line of quality storm water management solutions allow for both a proactive and immediate reactionary response to any kind of run off or emergency spill situation.  However, it is important to understand the related EPA regulations and which products can best help to meet them.

The Clean Water Act requires states to protect the nation’s waters for various designated purposes such as drinking water, fishing, swimming, irrigation and industrial use.  Statewide water quality standards are generally established based on the designated use of a particular body of water. Additionally, quality standards for lakes and rivers that are tapped as a drinking water supply are typically more stringent than the standards for those used primarily for industrial use, farming or irrigation.

So, what is TMDL?

Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is a calculation of the maximum amount of a pollutant that a body of water can receive and still meet water quality standards, and an allocation of that load among the various sources of that pollutant.  According the Environmental Protection Agency website: “The goal of the Clean Water Act (CWA) is ‘to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters’ (33 U.S.C §1251(a)). Under section 303(d) of the CWA, states are required to develop lists of impaired waters. These are waters for which technology-based regulations and other required controls are not stringent enough to meet the water quality standards set by states. The law requires that states establish priority rankings for waters on the lists and develop Total Maximum Daily Loads for these waters.”

For specific pollutants that may cause a body of water to fail water quality standards, states are required to conduct a TMDL study that identifies sources of each pollutant that fails to meet water quality standards. Water quality sampling and computer modeling may then be used to determine how much each pollutant source must reduce its contribution to assure that the water quality standard is met.  The EPA has created a TMDL State Program tool, called, ‘EnviroMapper for Water’ to assist both governments and industry in learning more about specific TMDL programs and to identify and locate impaired waters in a given state.

Safe and Affordable Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) Tank Storage

Interstate Products Expands Online Selection of IBC Spill Containment Pallets

Interstate Products, Inc. (IPI), the leading manufacturer of spill containment products and the preferred source for environmental and industrial products now offers a larger selection of intermediate bulk container (IBC) tank storage products to help eliminate the possibility of major spills and provide the best solutions for regulatory compliance.  As a major US and international distributor, IPI offers the most flexible and comprehensive spill protection, secondary containment and storage products from Ultra Tech, Eagle and other leading manufacturers.  In addition to its current line of spill pallets for 2, 4, 6 and 8 drum requirements, the company has also expanded its online offering on IBC spill pallets.

Containment pallets for drums have achieved widespread industry acceptance since their introduction in the late 1980s.  However, in recent years, many companies have chosen to discontinue using drums in favor of Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs).  As expected, these companies are now concerned with capturing leaks from tanks caused by rust, corrosion, faulty valves and worn fittings.  To help solve these problems, IPI now offers a larger selection of Ultra IBC Spill Containment Pallet models that are designed to meet these needs and allow for compliance with EPA Container Storage Regulations.

There is no need to risk worker safety and material waste when you can capture leaks, drips and spills that can easily be contained for recovery.  With IPI’s affordable EPA and SPCC compliant secondary containment pallet solutions for IBC tank storage, industrial users can deploy rugged, large capacity polyethylene tanks that provide excellent chemical resistance and are available in a variety of sizes and configurations for both indoor and outdoor use.  IPI’s secondary spill containment solutions include double stack IBC tank pallets with or without drains, steel pallets, Drum Spill Stations, totes, fluorinated spill decks and eco-friendly spill control pallets from Justrite which are made of up to 100% recycled polyethylene and post-industrial recycled material.

IPI has many types of IBC pallets to choose from including Eagle All-Poly IBC containment units for the storage of single tanks or double tanks.  Eagle containment tubs are manufactured with 100% polyethylene and include a heavy duty polyethylene platform that offers more chemical resistance than steel frame IBC pallets and feature a 400 gallon secondary spill capacity. The extra wide platform shelf accepts IBC units up to 50″ square and can handle a 10,000 pound load capacity.

As a leading multi-brand supplier of quality environmental, maintenance and safety product solutions for industrial, commercial, institutional and various government organizations, IPI’s line of spill control pallets and IBC pallets meet or exceed SPCC and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for secondary spill containment under regulation 40 CFR 264.175.  For assistance selecting the right product for your specific application call our product specialists toll free at 1-800-474-7294 for domestic inquiries and 941-377-8610 if outside the United States.  To learn more about Interstate Product’s wide selection of portable spill berms, drum containment and IBC spill containment pallets visit our online store at: http://store.interstateproducts.com/IBC_Spill_Containment_Pallets

Reduce Accident and Fire Risk with Flammable Storage Safety Cans

Flammable or combustible liquids are used in almost every industry and place of business.  Gasoline, chemicals, solvents and a variety of other hazardous liquids are found in varying amounts and locations in industrial, commercial and residential settings.  Since many of these liquids are relatively common, it is important to understand the dangers they present and the special storage and handling procedures required to ensure safe usage.  For any hazardous substance, safe handling should always begin by reviewing the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each product to determine its specific characteristics and the recommended safety practices.  The next step is to ensure that the correct storage container is used for each type of liquid.  Metal gas cans for flammable substances are designed to prevent spillage and accidents, reduce fire risk and offer regulatory compliance while maintaining a safer workplace.

Interstate Products (IPI), a leading provider of spill containment products and the preferred source for environmental and industrial solutions offers a wide variety of flammable storage safety cans from manufacturers, Eagle and Justrite, that offer users both safety and convenience while facilitating the storage and transfer of flammable liquids, ensuring the safety of personnel and the protection of facilities and environment where they are used.  The basic purpose of a safety can is the control of flammable vapors while providing a convenient means of carrying, dispensing and storing up to five gallons of flammable liquid.  Accidents and fire risks can be minimized by using the proper safety equipment. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has published numerous consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks associated with combustible liquid storage, including specific information on what is required of a safety can in order for it to perform as expected under fire conditions.

The right safety cans serve several critical functions:

  • Safely contain hazardous liquids and control vapors to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Offer compliance with federal OSHA regulations and state and local fire codes.
  • Improve efficiency with ease-of-use features in pouring and filling operations

IPI has recently expanded its selection of Justrite safety cans.  Designed for material handling safety, these products and are ideal for industrial, commercial and residential users who utilize and store combustible liquids, and users who are required to comply with OSHA regulations and state and local fire codes.  All Justrite safety cans available from IPI undergo rigorous testing requirements by independent third party agencies and have received certification from Factory Mutual (FM Approved) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL and ULC Listed).  Justrite also offers an exclusive Ten-Year Warranty on all of its safety containers and 5 gallon gas cans.

Interstate Products has a variety of Type I and Type II flammable storage safety cans to choose from to help you meet any need for flammable liquid dispensing and containment, each offering specific features to meet any hazardous liquid requirement.  In addition, IPI offers utility and specialty cans, including oily waste cans used for the disposal of oil-soaked rags and to protect your facility from fires that can start due to spontaneous combustion, sparks and careless use of smoking materials.  Rags and cloths soaked with solvents, thinners, linseed oil, combustible adhesives and other flammable liquids present a serious fire risk when improperly discarded.  OSHA compliant oily waste cans are essential whenever solvent soaked cloths and wiping rags are used.

Using the right flammable liquid handling solution helps eliminate the potential spillage of dangerous contents on workers, decreasing the risk of contamination.  As an additional safety measure, IPI carries a vast selection of flammable storage cabinets for paint, pesticides, fuels and corrosives.  Interstate Products’ selection of Justrite solvent cans and gasoline cans offer users regulatory compliance, safety and convenience.  As the authority on industrial safety products, secondary containment and materials handling solutions, our experts are always available to assist in product selection.  For detailed product information and easy ordering instructions visit our online safety can store or contact our industrial safety product specialists by calling toll free, 1-800-474-7294 for domestic inquiries.  To learn more about our full selection of industrial maintenance and safety products please visit our website at: http://store.interstateproducts.com/JUSTRITE_Safety_Cans

There are a variety of products to choose from offering features to meet any drum handling requirement.  Interstate Products 201 Series Portable Drum Rotators are designed to rotate drums at single speeds of 10, 20, or 30 RPM.  Our 201VS Series is a variable speed rotator with built in transmission allowing users to vary drum speed from 10 to 24 RPM, which can be ideal for experimental use.

201VS Series (above)

Other models available include:

201B Series Belted Portable Drum Rotator –

The belted drum rollers have a pair of belts between the rollers to turn the drum. Belted Rotators allow a fiber drum weighing up to 300 Lbs. to be rolled without damaging the fiber sidewall. 201B Series belted drum rollers are available with same drum speed and motor types as 201 Series.

POLY-201 Plastic Drum Roller –

Since plastic drums are soft-sided and lack the ridged ribs and rims of a steel drum, they require special features to position them on the drum roller, and to prevent them from traveling lengthways during rotation.  Three extra wheels on each side are designed to support a 55-gallon plastic drum. The weight of your plastic drum is then distributed over a total of 14 wheels and an end-stop prevents the drum from traveling while being rolled.  As an added feature, a chain to latch around the top of the drum while tipping from upright to horizontal rolling position on the drum rotator is included.

Interstate Products’ selection of Morse drum rollers are designed to accommodate a variety of drum types and sizes; and all of our drum lifters, drum rotators and tumblers offer users safety and convenience while saving valuable time and effort.  As the authority on industrial and environmental spill control, secondary containment and materials handling solutions, our experts are always available to assist in product selection.  IPI has made ordering Morse drum tumblers and rollers fast and easy.  Please visit our new online store to view product demonstration and training videos and to order online or contact our drum handling specialists for a quote.  To learn more about our full selection of drum lifting equipment, drum rollers, tumblers and drum stackers visit our website at:
